PDF Print E-mail

Milton Keynes Skin Cancer CheckBoots in Milton Keynes is helping local residents identify any signs of skin caner through mole checks available in-store this Thursday 8th May.

Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer and the number of new cases in the UK has doubled in the last 20 years. However, most cases are easily treated and cured if detected in the early stages; Boots is therefore urging people from the area to check out their moles.

Customers can book a consultation in advance by phoning 0800-0854428or through a dedicated website . Carried out by a highly trained nurse in a private area of the Boots store, the consultation will take 20 minutes and cost £49 to scan up to 3 moles. The results of each screening will then be sent to a consultant dermatologist for assessment before a full diagnosis is sent to the patient and their GP.

Mike Brown, Boots Suncare Scientific Advisor for Boots, comments:

Some types of skin cancer could be avoided if people checked their moles regularly. Patients are particularly advised to have their moles examined professionally if they notice any changes in shape, size, colour, or if a mole is itchy, bleeds or if a scab forms. By taking 20 minutes out of your day for a mole check at Boots, you could have peace of mind for the rest of the summer.

MoleNetÔ, a screening service developed by Astron Clinica Ltd, offers the most thorough mole screening on the high street. A handheld scanner scans to a depth of about 2mm and visualises five different elements of the skin for the expert to view on-line:

  • Colour scan - used as a basis of diagnosis
  • Blood scan - showing areas of increased and decreased blood typical of melanoma (only available using MoleNetÔ)
  • Melanin scan - showing the total amount of melanin in the skin and lesion (only available using MoleNetÔ)
  • Dermal Melanin Scan - showing deep irregular dermal melanin typical of melanoma (only available using MoleNetÔ)
  • Collagen scan - showing irregular collagen changes typical of melanoma (only available using MoleNetÔ).

The nurse also takes a medical history of the patient and a colour photograph of the mole and, together with the scans, all of this information is sent to the expert doctor.

"MoleNet™ at Boots offers the most ethical mole screening service on the market which also gives the consumer the best value for money, said Prof. Annie Brooking, CEO, Astron Clinica"
