Jo Brand Review 6th May The Stables Milton Keynes
This was my first time visiting the Stables so I was a little excited about going, especially being my first visit, and witnessing Jo Brand in action. It was a sell-out show at full capacity having an auditorium holding up to 400 people in all. I got there an hour early so I could meet with Rachel Fleet the Marketing Manager. It was all very professional, even the car park was full of attendants and Rachel made me feel very welcome. We chatted and she told me a little about the venue and its history. Starting in 1969 the Stables has been going for almost 40 years. I asked her "is it called The Stables because it was an actual stable?" she said "yes, the foyer" (where we sat with our drinks) "was where the horses where kept." She showed me around and we chatted up until the show started, then Rachel shook my hand and left me to enjoy the show. Jo Brand had a support act; Andy Robinson who started at 8pm. Andy is a comedian from Birmingham who I thought was very good. I liked his set from start to finish. Although you may not have heard of Andy Robinson, he is a comedian on the comedy circuit. His set seemed full and long but was only half an hour. By 8.30pm Andy came off the stage leaving the audience smiling. There was a 15 minute interval for a cigarette and a drink if you liked although I’m happy to say you can take your drink into the auditorium. It was 8.50pm when Jo came on. She was just like I’ve seen on TV. I expected nothing but a solid performance and that's just what we got. She had us all in stitches. She started reading from our local paper the Citizen which was funny. It was typical Jo Brand with jokes like: “when I was a kid a man came out of the bushes and asked me if I would like a sweetie” she said “OK but only if you show us your knob.” And “my husband hates it when I snore especially when were having sex.” Richard and Jo have known each other ten years and have toured together several times. I couldn't believe how good they were with the audience. There was a nice friendly balance of cohesion between the comic and crowd. Jo and Richard came back on stage to finish the night off with a song, and by 10pm the show was over. It was a good laugh and a lovely evening. I'd definitely recommend the Stables whether it be for comedy or music. They'll also be showcasing Milton Keynes acts in the near future.
