The Warsaw Village Band-The Stables Sunday 14 September, 8pm Print E-mail
It's the Polish Pogues! Winners of a BBC World Music award, this band have taken ancient Polish traditional music and revamped it for a new generation - and what a revamp! They call it "bio-techno" - it's got hyponotic trancey rhythms, open throat "white voice" singing and tons of punky attitude, played on instruments like hurdy gurdy, frame drums, cello, cimbalom and szuka (that's a fiddle that you play with your fingernails). This is hardcore folk we're talking about here, from an outfit that's not so much a band as a force of nature!
