The Ladykillers (Review) at The Chrysalis Theatre, Camphill, Milton Keynes

The Ladykillers at The Chrysalis Theatre, Camphill, Milton KeynesTuesday night saw the opening of the classic Ealing comedy The Ladykillers at The Chrysalis Theatre, Camphill, Milton Keynes. An audience were entertained for a couple of hours by a classic story that was first made in 1955 starring Alec Guiness, Peter Sellers, Herbert Lom and many more. It is the story about a gang of gentlemen crooks who take advantage of the lettings of a sweet old lady to use as a base of operations for their schemes to steal a large amount of cash in a security van heist. When the old lady realizes what’s going on and because of her conscience threatens to tell the cops, the crooks are left with a dilemma, can they afford to let her live?

The Camphill Theatre is a new equipped modern theatre part of the Camphill Milton Keynes Community, where 50 residents with learning disabilities live and work with co-workers and families, many being volunteers from around the globe. Camphill is a nice area and as we arrived we were greeted to an ensemble of live classical music. There was red and white wine available which was free but it was courteous to leave a small voluntary donation. It’s similar to the Stables, except the Stables has a lovely posh smell to it. Not to say that it smelt coz it didn’t, if I was gonna compare it to anything I’d say it smelt like water.

The performances were good. The set was basic, minimal but effective. They had a great sound effect of a train coz that is where the little old lady lived, by a train track but this effect was used a lot. I’d say they used the sound effect about 20 times at least. There was a 20 minute interval between sets. Overall it was good. I knew what the story was about, so I knew what was coming. It might be more enjoyable for someone who doesn’t know anything about the script.

An entertaining evening – Bobby Z
